Welcome 5th Grade Families!

Dear Future Jaguars,

We are excited to welcome your family to middle school. In the next few days you will also receive a paper version of this communication. Our goal at JAMS is to make information as easy as possible to access so we will continue to send updates via this newsletter.. Please let us know at jams@seattleschools.org if your address, phone number, or email has changed. We want to be sure that families are getting the information they need for a successful transition to middle school.

In the next two months, our 6th grade team of myself, teachers, and 6th Grade Counselor, Mr. Max will visit elementary school classrooms (John Rogers, Olympic Hills, Sacajawea, Olympic View, Cedar Park, Cascadia, Thornton Creek, and Decatur) to talk about middle school. We will offer a virtual session for students who are not in our traditional pathway schools. But even before we meet your student for the first time, we are preparing here at JAMS. It all starts with a class schedule.

Class Registration (this is what everyone is looking for)

Most students get to select “elective courses” in middle school. All students take Language Arts, Social Studies, Math, and Science but have options for their additional classes. As students get older they have even more choice in 7th and 8th grade. Please see the student registration link below for more information about electives. For students who qualify for special education services, additional meetings/communications will happen in June and in the summer to discuss transition plans. Our IEP teachers will work directly with elementary schools this spring to support planning for your student. Our students receive Highly Capable services through a cluster group model in our Language Arts, Social Studies, and Science classes. All students take the next course in sequence for their math classes.

Elective descriptions for 6th grade.

Your Middle School Counselor

At Jane Addams we have three counselors with each counselor staying with the same students all three years of middle school. Our counselors will all have office hours at JAMS scheduled in late August to answer any questions or discuss any concerns for the upcoming school year. Counselors will reach out about 504 plans in late summer/early fall. Your 6th grade counselor is Mr. Max. Mr. Max is currently very busy preparing our 8th graders for high school and will be more able to connect with families in June and during August.

In June, please start to check out our webpage at addamsms.seattleschools.org on a regular basis for updates. There you can find staff contact information as well as calendars, school policies, school supply lists, and other important information. We will update our websites, this newsletter and social media as we get closer to the start of the 22-23 school year.
