    **NEW** In Superintendent Juneau’s June 1 Letter to Families, she said, "Classrooms across the district are taking time this week to discuss the events that have unfolded in recent weeks and the history leading up to them. We ask for your partnership in continuing these important discussions with young people at home. These are not one-time conversations but must be ongoing learning that each of us courageously engages in."

    Environmental Stewardship News

    **NEW** Paint the Jaguar August 22
    Join us to refresh the paint on our Jaguar at the main entrance to the school.  Painting will occur Saturday, August 22 from 9AM-1PM. Questions?

    **NEW** JAMS Summer projects
    If you visit the school grounds over the summer, you will notice some improvements happening! The athletic fields will be replaced and field lights installed. Also, the parking lot will be repaved, beginning next week, and portables will be installed in August. More details here.

    Homemade face masks for JAMS

    Calling all of JAMS’s crafters, sewers, and creatives! We need your talents, now more than ever. We have families in our community that don’t have access or resources to procure masks and are in need of cloth masks.

    While they don’t replace medical-grade personal protective equipment, cloth masks help keep the wearer’s germs from getting on other people, which is key to stopping the spread of COVID-19. If you’re able to make and donate homemade masks this opportunity to help our community is for you. If you have questions or have masks to donate, email Mr. Mishra (

    Seattle Public Schools Information

    2020-21 School year

    Planning is underway for the first day of school, September 2. While it is still unclear what guidance and restrictions from public health agencies may be in place this fall, it will almost certainly impact the way we provide student learning and school operations will look very different for the 2020-21 school year. As always, the health and safety of our students and staff will be our highest priority and any plan will prioritize access of students furthest from educational justice. SPS is expected to make an announcement regarding plans for next school year TODAY.

    **NEW** Summer Skill Center applications open

    The summer and school year Skills Center course applications are open!

    In summer, the Seattle Skills Center provides introductory versions of most of our advanced Career Connected Learning school year courses. Students can earn a .5 CTE credit.  Classes run weekdays, July 7 to July 31, 11:00am to 3:15pm and will include teacher instruction and class time via Teams or Zoom every day.  All high school students can apply (including this year’s 8th graders), however, due to limited space, priority will be given to 11th and 12th grade students who need CTE credit to graduate on time.     The Seattle Skills Center is a free program in Seattle Public Schools that prepares students for college, careers, and life. We provide this training through our regular school year courses and our summer program.

    Community Events and Programs

    **NEW** Free COVID testing options

    Expanded, free COVID-19 testing options are available throughout King County:

    Public Health recommends testing as soon as you notice symptoms, which include fever or chills, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, fatigue, muscle or body aches, headache, new loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, nausea or vomiting, and diarrhea.

    If you have been at protests or other gatherings and wonder if you’ve been exposed and/or if you really do have symptoms (is that runny nose due to allergies?), please consider getting tested or contact your primary care provider for guidance. The testing threshold is very low right now.

    Here is information specific to protests and COVID-19:

    Another testing option is to consider participating in Public Health’s SCAN project: SCAN grew out of the Seattle Flu Study and is unique in that a courier drops a self-test kit off at your doorstep and then it is picked up a few hours later or the next day. Their aim is to understand the spread of COVID-19 throughout King County among people with symptoms and those who are asymptomatic. Enrollment opens at 2 pm each day; there are a limited number of kits available in each zip code and age group. More information in their FAQ:

    **NEW** Coyote Virtual Classes

    This is your chance to engage in virtual face-to-face time using the Zoom platform and be led through traditional Coyote icebreakers, demonstrations, discussions and reflections. You'll have the opportunity to interact with your instructor and your peers "real-time" during that daily hour. At the end of the hour-long, interactive Zoom session, you'll be assigned 1-1.5 hours of creative project work that you'll be expected to complete independently prior to your next Zoom session. You'll also have the opportunity to submit daily progress checks that your instructor will respond to directly. Instructors will incorporate technique, critique, and interactive teaching in each session. It'll look JUST like a Studio Coyote class, only your friends will be on your screen and your art will be in your home!

    All JAMS students can read ebooks from the Seattle Public Library (even if they don't have a library card)

    Hello Jane Addams Middle School students and parents,

    Looking for books to read during school and public library closures?  All JAMS students can access free Seattle Public Library ebooks, even if they have never signed up for a public library card or have lost their library card or PIN number!

    All 6th-12th grade students in Seattle Public Schools automatically have an SPL/SPS digital Library Link card (whether or not they have a Seattle Public Library card) that can be used to access free ebooks plus any other online materials and resources on the website.  

    (All students are enrolled in Library Link by the district unless their parents opt out.  There are no blocks on a Library Link e-card. Student information is confidential). 

    In addition to teen or kids ebooks/get started with ebooks & the Libby app, there are also a lot of great free comics and graphic novels for students on Hoopla, with no limit on the number of people reading at the same time.

    **SPS/SPL student Library Link barcodes are the student's ID number preceded by 99 and several 0s. (A Library card number must be 13 digits long. Most student IDs are 7 digits, so most cards will have four zeroes. If an ID number is more or less than 7 digits long, it will have a different number of zeroes to make a 13 digit number.)

    Student PINs will be their birth month and day, so if they are born on April 6 their password would be 0406.

    JAMS students can (and hopefully do!) have a Library link digital card plus an SPL library card to access all the free ebooks and online resources plus print books and other physical materials when the libraries are open!  Enjoy your reading,
